"Chrissy, what's wrong?"
"Troy just left."
"What!" She spits out with slight anger behind it. "What do you mean he left? He was going there to be with you."
"It's not like that."
I tell her everything. Even about the property he bought and the home and barn we plan on building.
"So, what's wrong?"
"I want to leave now, and I can't. I have this apartment."
"And?"
"And my emotions just feel like they have been on a roller coaster ride. I was ready to leave, then he showed up and wanted to stay. Then he got the job offer, and we decided he needed to leave again."
"Yeah, that's a lot in a very short amount of time."
"Ugh!" I groan.
"Listen, it's only a month. In the grand scheme of things, one month of your life is a drop in the bucket when it comes to being with someone you love."
"Okay, Sally Sunshine."
She laughs, which makes me laugh.
"I can do this." I let out a fast breath. "Iwilldo this."
"That's the right attitude."
"I'm trying."
"I have faith in you."
"Thanks."
"You're welcome. And whenever you are feeling like this, no matter the time, you can always call me."
"Love you, friend."
"Love you, too, friend."
We hang up, and I feel lighter. Talking to her helps, a lot. I set my phone on the coffee table then go into the bathroom to make myself a little more presentable. I reach for my toothbrush, but there are two of them. Troy's toothbrush. He must have forgotten it. I grab the toothbrush and look around. What do I do? He needs his toothbrush, doesn't he?
I slip my feet into some flipflops, grab my keys and my purse, and leave. I'll just make sure he has it. He's going to need it. I get in my car and crank it. I drive a little fast to the airport, but I know if I don’t, I'll miss his flight, and he won't have it for tonight before bed. I hold the toothbrush in my hand against the wheel as I pull up to the departure doors. I run inside and look for the counter for his airline.
"Excuse me. I need to get this to someone." I hold the toothbrush up and the woman behind the counter looks at me with concern on her face.
"Ma'am, that's a toothbrush."
"Yes, I know that. He needs it, how else will he brush his teeth tonight?"
"Um," she says as she looks around. "He could buy a new one."
I pause, my mouth agape. I look to the toothbrush and then everyone around me. Confusion twists all their faces.
What am I doing?
