"Of course, I would." He puts his hand on my knee.
I chew on my lip and take a deep breath.
"What is it?" he asks.
"I was ready to be in Montana. With you and Sarah. Everyone here is leaving."
"What do you mean?"
"I told you how my brother is joining the military."
"Yeah."
"Well, my parents want to move away from the snow, and Sophia would go with them."
He nods his head a few times. "Well, let’s wait a bit and see how things play out. Is that acceptable?"
"Yeah. I don't see how that would cause any harm."
"Good."
Chapter twenty-four
Troy
Afewdayspass, and most of it is spent in Chrissy's bed. I take every chance she gives me to touch her, feel her, and be inside of her. I don't think I will ever grow tired of being with her, and I can't imagine living the rest of my life without her.
I finish cleaning the dishes after dinner while she takes a shower. My ringtone startles me. I dry my hands and grab my phone. It's from a Montana number, but I don't know who.
"Hello," I say.
"Hello, I’m looking for Troy?" the man asks.
"This is him."
"Hi Troy, my name is Bernie. I work at the mine. We noticed you quit suddenly."
"I did. Why, is something wrong?"
"Not wrong, no. We wanted to give you a call because you were put in by your boss for a position last month. It's a supervisor position."
"I had no idea."
"No, you wouldn't. There were a lot of hats in the game but in the end, you are the one we picked."
"Okay, but I quit."
"We understand that. We still wanted to make sure you have all the information just in case you wanted to change your mind."
"And what information is that?"
Bernie went on to tell me all the responsibilities I would be undertaking as a supervisor. But the best part, it's above ground ninety percent of the time, and it comes with a thirty thousand dollar pay raise.
"I understand this isn't a decision that can be made right now. If you could get back to me within the next couple of days to let me know either way, I would appreciate it."
"Will do. Thank you."
"Thank you, too. Bye."
