"You did, though. Just one more dance."
I shake my head, turn around and walk away. I don’t stop until I lock myself in the bathroom. Then, everything that’s in my stomach comes out.
My throat burns as I lean back against the wall.
Troy and I aren't a thing, but that felt so wrong.
Chapter nineteen
Chrissy
"Chrissy, youwon'tbelieveit. And I am not telling you this because I desperately want you to be here, but...the bank in town is hiring a new manager."
Sarah didn't even give me time to say hello when I answered the phone. The excitement in her voice speaks volumes, though.
"Come on Chrissy, it's a sign."
"That a bank is hiring. That happens all the time," I say, not wanting to get my hopes up.
"But a manager position, in this town. It doesn't happen often."
"I don't know, Sarah. Everything just kinda sucks right now."
"Why's that?"
"Well, James is leaving for the military in a month, my parents want to move to Florida, Sophia wants to go with them, and Dean showed up at the graduation party last night trying to get some."
"Whoa, wait. Dean showed up? Did you kick him in the balls?"
"No. I ran away from him and puked."
"I mean, that makes sense. He's a horrible person."
"He would have had to break up with me eventually."
"Yeah, but he didn't have to lead you on all summer."
"I know."
"Hold on, did you say your parents are moving?"
"They said they want to go on vacation and then possibly move to Florida. They are over dealing with snow."
"That makes sense, too."
I sigh.
"What is it, Chrissy?"
"Everyone's leaving."
"Did you think everyone would stay in the same spot their whole life?"
"I was hoping."
"Well then, this is all the more reason to apply for this job. Come live here, in Columbus Falls. We could spend our whole lives here, growing old and yelling at kids from our front porches."
"I'll think about it."
