I go back to the gas station to grab some food to eat and a couple of drinks. On my way out I bump right into someone. My bag rips and everything falls out.
“Oh shoot, sorry about that. Here, let me get that for you.”
I am already down trying to gather everything when the man kneels to help me. I look up at him.
“Sarah?” the man says to me. His brows pinch together; and confusion splashed across his face.
My face must tell a similar story, because I do not know who this person is. I grab the last thing and bunch it all in my arms.
“I’m sorry? Who are you?” I ask him as we both stand.
“Oh shit, right. I’m Troy, Chris’s friend.”
“And how do you know me?”
“Y’all took lots of pictures together. Chris posted them online.”
Of course, he did, duh. I did the same thing.
“Oh, right. That makes sense.”
“I thought you were leaving today?” he asks.
“I am. Well, I was.”
“Was?”
“I got off the bus. They left without me.”
“Oh shit, do we need to call someone? Do you need a ride to the airport? Is your luggage on the bus?”
“No. No. I did it on purpose.”
The confusion takes over his face again.
“I want to see Chris again. I didn’t like saying goodbye.”
Troy's face softens, and a knowing smile spreads across his lips.
“Did you want to see him now? I can take you to him. I was just about to head to the bar.”
“I can’t. I don’t know if I should. If this was a crazy idea, I could still make my flight.”
“I understand,” he nods his head. “But if you change your mind.” He pulls a gum wrapper from his pocket and pulls a pen from behind his ear.
“Here is my number.”
“Thanks, Troy.”
“Not a problem at all,” he turns to go, but stops. “Sarah, if it’s any consolation, I’m pretty sure the guy is head over heels for you.”
My heart skips a beat, and my body feels weak for a second.
“That might help. Thank you.”
“See, ya.” He turns and walks to his truck. I watch as he pulls away to go hang out with Chris.
Head over heels?I think as I walk back to the hotel. The realist side of me is telling me to weigh the pros' and cons’. But my heart is overruling that right now.
