“What’s it about?”
I peek my eyes over the top of my book and see that he has moved to the edge of his bed, only a few feet away from me.
“It’s about a man and woman who fall in love, duh.”
He laughs. “Well, I figured that.”
“Then why did you ask, silly.”
There is a long pause, and I’m not even comprehending the things I am reading.
“Will you read it to me?”
If I thought my heart rate was high before, I would be lying because now it’s sprinting laps around my chest.
“You want me to read to you?”
“I mean, I could sit next to you and read along with you, but I am a pretty slow reader.”
“Umm. OK, sure. I usually only read aloud to children, but why not.”
Chris hops back to the head of the bed and pats the space next to him. I get up and sit down on the bed, a good foot of space between us.
“You’re lucky, I just started this the other night, so there isn’t much to catch up on. The heroine’s family is in the mafia, and she is going to be married off soon. The hero was just introduced in the last chapter, and it’s his brother she’s supposed to be marrying but he has always had a thing for her.”
I look over at him, and he is watching every word I say. I’m thankful the hero was just introduced. There shouldn’t be any smut for a little while.
“So, in this chapter, he just called her and asked to see her. She’s on her way to meet him at a little bistro.”
I read to him. He goes between watching me and putting his head against the headboard and closing his eyes but peeking occasionally, so I know he didn’t fall asleep.
After two chapters I stop and slide my bookmark in.
“Wait. You can’t stop now. He was on his way to talk to her again. Tell her how he feels,” Chris says.
“Well, maybe he shoulda done that at the bistro.” I shut the book with the clap.
“Maybe he was too nervous.”
“Excuses.” I roll my eyes and lean towards the edge of the bed, ready to get up and he gently grabs my arm to stop me.
“One more chapter.”
It wasn’t a question as much as a statement but said in the sweetest voice. I look back at him, smirk and roll my eyes.
“Fine,” I say and drag the word out as I roll back into my spot. I open the book, tuck the bookmark in the back and continue reading.
Chris moves a little closer to me, and I don’t mind it. The warmth from his body comforts me.
Before I know it, the book takes a turn and the warmth from his body becomes fire through my core as I read the very intense, descriptive sex scene.
Chris turns his head towards me, and my cheeks are a-flame. He moves closer, and I feel his bare chest on my arm. His nose grazes my hair.
“Sarah, I could listen to you read all night.”
His voice on the shell of my ear sends shivers down my spine. I slowly turn my head towards him, and our air becomes each other’s.
“I really want to kiss you,” he says with an urgency and want I haven’t heard from a man before.
