“Carter,” I said incredulously.Liar. He was about to tell me something about himself, but lost his chance. “Do you always kiss your friends ex girlfriends?” I asked.
He smirked, but I wasn’t sure if it was because that’s what he did or if it was because I wasn’t changing my mind over Carter. “That wasn’t a kiss, princess. That was a warm-up,” he said, smiled, turned and sauntered off.
I stood wide-eyed, unable to say anything else as I watched the swagger in his walk, the man was sexy as fuck, looked like an angel and walked like a god, but I was no further with him, and he still tried to piss me off by calling me princess, or maybe he didn’t. Was I being too precious? He didn’t know how I felt about it.
He turned on his heel and strode quickly towards me. My jaw dropped open. He stopped and his face lowered to mine. He stared for a moment and I thought he was going to kiss me again. “I came here to ask you to keep away from Jack and Blake, they’re bad news.”
Shaking my head, I laughed. “Protecting me is one thing, deciding on who I choose to date is another.” Because Carter and his friends were not stopping me from living my life.
“Date?” he said, his chest rose on the word.
My brows furrowed. “Maybe.”
His mouth straightened into a tight line and he inhaled deeply through his nose. Staring for a few more seconds, before his mouth opened. “I know them, believe me, they’re bad news.”
I reared my head back slightly and let out a sardonic laugh. Kane thought Jack and Blake were bad news when he was no better. I knew because Polly had told me as much. And yes, he had something mysterious about him, but there was no way, he wasn’t breaking my heart.
“That’s my problem,” I said. “Don’t concern yourself. Anyway, everyone deserves a chance, regardless of other people’s opinions.”
“Including Carter?” he asked.
“No, that would be a second chance and I don’t do second chances.”
He raised his eyes and burst out laughing, turned, and walked away.
Chapter 13

Laterintheweeka new lecturer replaced Liam for the lesson and she had an ear-piercing voice that was so high it would make angels swear but worse she walked around with a noisy remote and the clicking was grating on my nerves.
I grimaced, knowing I’d struggle to handle one hour of listening to her read out everything on the large screen in front of us and clicking her thing.
Click. Click.
“With the Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co, you…” the lecturer’s voice shrilled and I stopped listening and turned to Polly.
Click.
“I’m going to get away when she reads the information on the next slide,” I whispered. The way the lecturer taught it wouldn’t be too difficult to catch up on today’s lecture from the student law site.
“Where are you going?” she said as she twisted to me.
“I’m going to the library to work on some stuff I need to catch up on.” I made a few notes of what she was going to cover and closed my reading books and placed them in my bag with my pen and notepad, ready to do independent research in the library. While I was there, I planned to hack into my father’s law firm.
Clay probably already had the information I wanted. But as he wasn’t forthcoming, this way I would find the truth, I hoped.
My phone dinged. I picked it up and pressed to read the message.
Clay: I need you to come and see me at the weekend. It is important.
I shook my head, it was strange and as much as I loved him, and he was always good to me, he had a power over me I hated and it really couldn’t be a coincidence he sent the message just at the same time I was thinking about him?
Me: I’ve got assignments to hand in next week. It’s a bad time.
I didn’t have to hand in any assignments until the following week, but I had a feeling about what he wanted to say to me.
Me: If it’s about the house. I’m not selling.
