I should have listened to him. I should have trusted him when he said he wouldn’t give the mixture to his brother.

“I’m a damn fool.”

“You were trying to help,” he whispered. “He’ll be fine, Teddy. He will. Stop crying.”

“But—”

He pulled up my head and wiped my tears with his thumb. “Please stop crying. I can’t fucking stand it.”

And the torture in his golden eyes was evident, almost a mirror to mine. I should have moved away from him by now. I was in his arms, and we both knew what happened when I was this close to him.

But for the life of me, I couldn’t bring myself to do anything other than bury my face in his chest again.

“It’s okay,” he kept whispering, holding me tight the way only he ever knew how.

And eventually, I even believed him. It was okay. Derek was strong. He was an adult—he could learn how to control his wolf because Dominic was there to guide him.

But even so, the bad feeling in my gut didn’t go away. I’d messed it up. I’d messed it up badly.

And soon…verysoon, I was going to have to face the consequences.
