I lifted an eyebrow. “Have you seen Lizzy? She’s buff; no one will mess with her. And I’m so deathly skinny right now that it looks like a have a six-pack, so I’ll scare them off if she doesn’t.”
Dax didn’t look convinced. “Not physically dangerous. She just… convinces people to do stupid things. She broke up two newly-mated couples after talking to the women for ten minutes. Can you bring Teagan, or Del? Or Ebony?”
I scowled. “We don’t need backup, and I’m kind of offended that you think we do. But Charly’s going too, and she’s not even a werewolf, so I don’t think Lisa could manipulate her about anything.” I carried my phone into the closet with me, setting it down just long enough to get dressed. I didn’t want him to read my texts with Lizzy and be offended by them like I had with his texts in the jail.
“You’re positive Char will be there?” he asked.
“Yes. And Lizzy’s having Elliot make sure Ryder doesn’t go anywhere near the coffee shop while we’re there,” I called over my shoulder. “It will be fine. Maybe I’ll make a new friend.”
“You don’t need new friends; you have the pack.”
I scowled at the wall, and changed the subject before my tongue got the best of me and I said something that got me thrown into the bitch category with poor Lisa. “Why do you think your wolf gets so violent about me?”
He didn’t even pause to think about it. “The witch said my wolf tried to claim you the first moment we met, but failed. Imagine what it’d be like to stare at your soulmate, knowing they were yours, from trapped behind a damned glass wall. To make matters worse, I was setting you up with other guys, and you were setting me up with other women—so my wolf was probably terrified he’d lose you to one of them. And months’ worth of aggression doesn’t fade instantly when a bond appears.”
Oh.
I guessed that made sense. Ish.
“Hmm,” I nodded, stepping into my clean clothes quickly before striding out of the closet. Dax didn’t move to make space for me to get past him, so I just had to push past. My damned body reacted, giving me goosebumps as I brushed against him.
“You’ll need to buy a couple breakfast items. One croissant isn’t going to cut it; you need calories. I’ll go grocery shopping while you’re gone, and plan a couple of meals. Do you want us to get added to the pack’s dinner rotation, or do you want to keep our place our own for a while longer?”
I blinked. “Is this our place, then?”
His eyes narrowed. “I thought it was.”
“You said you were okay with staying here until the mating process was over, because Ryder’s living with you. We never talked about making it official, or actually moving in with each other.”
Or… anything, really.
Panic clutched my stomach.
Fuck, I knew hardly anything about Dax. I knew that he was damned good in bed, and that he was patient, and that he was close with his pack, and liked to read romance…
But that was it.
What did he even do for work?
Did he have a college degree?
What were his hopes and dreams?
What were his life goals?
What did he want to accomplish in his life?
Was he a workaholic?
Did he like to cook?
What were his hobbies?
I nearly started having a panic attack then and there.
I’d just spent a week having sex with him—hot, incredible sex, that made me feel like we were connected to our damn souls—yet I didn’t know him.
I.
