“Did he hold her hand again?” Wesley asks me as his wife takes their little girl up to the front desk.

Gavin snickers on his other side, his baby boy in his arms.

“Should have had a boy first. They can watch out for their sisters then,” he says, and I flip him off behind Wesley’s back.

He just laughs as he heads inside to drop his kid off.

“It’s really not that big of a deal,” Harvie tells us, and Wesley and I share a look.

She doesn’t get it, but my best friend does.

“Did he smirk at you again?” Wesley asks, and Harvie throws her hands into the air and turns to head back to the car.

“Yep. I swear he knows that he’s driving me insane.”

“Little punk,” he grumbles, and I nod.

“How are things outside of daycare drama?” he asks me, and I grin.

“Good. Business is picking up a bit for Harvie and me, but we both have today off.”

“What the hell are you still doing here then?” he asks me, and I laugh as I clap him on the back and take off after my wife.

We don’t have a ton of free time ever since we had Maise so we take every spare moment that we can to be together.

Harvie started a recruitment firm here in Diamond. She teaches girls who want to be models how to walk and pose and uses her connections to get them auditions. It’s only grown over the last four years, and I’m so proud of her.

My protection agency has grown too. We don’t get a ton of bodyguard clients way out here, but the other local police departments have hired us out, and we’ve grown to include some of the neighboring towns too. A lot of the work is online, helping them track down cyber crimes, but Gavin and I are good at it. It’s nice to help the local communities too.

“Ready to go home?” I ask Harvie as I climb behind the wheel.

“Yeah,” she says through a yawn. “Sorry, I’ve been so tired lately, probably just worried about Maise starting preschool.”

“Maybe,” I say as a thought hits me.

I pull out of the parking lot and head toward home, but I pull into the parking lot of the nearest drugstore.

“Be right back,” I tell her, kissing her red lips before I climb out of the car and head inside.

We haven’t been using protection for the past few months. We got pregnant with Maise so easy, but this second time around has been more difficult, and it wasn’t for lack of trying on our parts.

Harvie has been exhausted lately. She falls asleep right after dinner, and sometimes I catch her taking a nap in the afternoon too. She hasn’t had morning sickness yet, but I know that it will bother me not to know, so I grab a pregnancy test and head up to the checkout.

Harvie is asleep in the passenger seat when I walk back out, and I smile to myself as I quietly climb behind the wheel and drive us home. She starts to stir when we pull into our driveway, and I squeeze her hand as I shift into park.

We moved out of the warehouse after we got married. It wasn’t really a place for a family, so I just use it for work. It’s come in handy the one other time that we had to hide someone.

We bought a little ranch-style home close to the King’s ranch. I know that Harvie loves being close to Arlowe, and the place is big enough for Maise to run around and play.

“Let’s get you inside.”

She nods, and we head inside. I pass her the bag once we get to the bedroom and she peeks inside. Her eyes widen when she sees the test, and I can see her doing the mental math.

“Let’s just see what it says,” I say gently, and she nods.

She disappears into the bathroom and I make the bed, pulling the sheets back so that she can crawl in when she gets out.

She opens the door and I join her in the bathroom, both of us staring down at the test as the results start to show.
