I know that if she were anywhere else, I would be too worried about her. I would turn into a stalker myself, watching her from the shadows to make sure that she’s safe and happy.
My heart kicks in my chest as I picture her smiling, and I know that I’m screwed.
I want her, and I know deep down that she’s meant to be mine.
My phone rings, startling me out of my thoughts, and I debate answering it when I see Wesley’s name on the screen. He knows me better than most. He’ll be able to hear how I feel about her. He could have information for me though, so I hit accept.
“Hey,” I say gruffly.
“Hey. You alright?”
“Yeah, just need a drink.”
“Well, stick to water. I have news on her stalker.”
“You figure out who it is?”
“No, but they sent another letter. The super of Harvie’s building just emailed it to me. I forwarded it to you. I guess they don’t know that she’s not there anymore yet. That could be a good sign. It means that they don’t know her schedule that closely.”
I nod, thinking about how many people that could narrow it down to.
“I’ll look it over now. Thanks, man.”
“Are you sure that you’re alright? You sound a little… I don’t know, off.”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I assure him. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
I end the call before he can say anything else and immediately pull up my email. The one from Wesley is right at the top, and I open it, reading over the latest letter from her stalker.
My love,
Why haven’t you responded? You’re ignoring me, and I don’t like when you do that.
We’re comingup on our anniversary soon, and I can’t wait to see you. I’ve got something big planned, my love.
My hand tightensaround my phone, and a chill runs down my spine as I reread it. He’s got something big planned for her, and I don’t want to imagine what that could be.
What anniversary? Of when they first met, or is it something more than that?
This could narrow down the list considerably, and I know that I’ll need to ask her about some of the people and when she met them.
“Hello?” Gavin asks, and I can hear the sound of popcorn popping in the background.
“Hey, Wesley checked in with Harvie’s super, and she got another letter. He emailed it to us.”
“Just a sec. I’ll check.”
I wait for him to read over the email, and I hear him swear.
“What does he mean, anniversary?” he asks.
“I don’t know. I had the same thought. I’ll need to ask her.”
“We should get the letter. Have it dusted for prints.”
“I’ll ask him to mail it to us, but chances are that the prints are gone after he handled it.”
“Still worth a shot.”
