It’s nice having family dinners on Sundays. Francesca and I have found a way to combine work and pleasure . . . and there is lots of pleasure. She even hangs out with me at the club.

A lesser man might be intimidated by a powerful woman, but to me, I’m just lucky she chose me.

“The wedding is coming up quickly,” she says as she stalks up behind me at work, overlooking the quiet club below as we’re ready to leave.

“It is.”

“But you’re nervous.”

“Yes,” I sigh heavily.

“Me too. You’d think those fucking Albanians would be grateful to us for handing Mario and Fausto to them, but it’s not been acknowledged.”

“I know. It’s Italy, Europe, the entire world has gone crazy.”

“Yes, it’s all changed. So much has changed.”

“But we have a happy occasion and we’ll be safe, then we have a vacation to look forward to.” I change to a lighter topic before she becomes depressed over the loss of her brothers.

“Yes, we do, and it’s a surprise.”

“I don’t like surprises. There are too many already,” I complain.

“I know, but it can’t be helped. I want to treat you for a change.”

We turn and walk down the steps and out to our car followed by our guards. I thought one or two was enough and annoying, but now it’s more like four.

We make our drive home and we both know this is the calm before the storm. The only difference is, we have a good idea where the next battle ground will be. It’s closer to home, and I suspect Francesca will be in the middle of that too.
