“I told them I wasn’t sure. I need to stay here with you. And the auction? I don’t have that extra time.”

Mom waved her hand. “Don’t you worry about me. I can manage. I’m getting along just fine, and I can get someone to stop by to help with things. If this is what you want to do, you need to do it.”

There was a firmness in her voice. Was she encouraging me to go because she had chosen to stay? If that was the case, why had she been pushing me to date someone the entire time I’d been here?

“What about Bryce?” I wondered out loud. Mom’s empathetic expression encouraged me to continue. “We’re just starting to really connect again. I don’t want to hurt him.”

She nodded. “That’s a tough one, Krys. Bryce is a big boy, though. Have you gotten that serious?”

I shook my head. “Not really.” I thought about the kisses we’d shared and the laughter. The house he had, waiting for the right woman. Waiting for me all along, if my suspicions were correct. The night under the stars. “I don’t know. Maybe?”

“Well, then I think you need to talk to him more than you need to talk to me.”

Yeah, but that was a conversation I wasn’t really ready to have.
