“Are you serious?” she asked. “Oh my god, get your iPad and go to YouTube! Like, right now!”

“Kris—”

“Just do it!”

Sighing, Becca found her iPad Pro where she’d last left it, charging on her nightstand. She opened the YouTube app.

“Okay, now what?” she asked.

“Type in ‘lesbian firefighter rescue.’”

“What?”

“Just do it!”

“Aargh!”

Becca tapped in the search string and then her jaw dropped.

A video from a local news station, which had already been seen more than a million times, appeared. Playing it, Becca recognized last night’s office building in the aerial footage. She saw a Navy chopper descending to the rooftop and several firefighters approaching it. One of the firefighters was wearing a white battalion chief’s helmet.

That’s me.

Suddenly, there was an explosion. For the first time, Becca bore witness to how close the Navy chopper came to being destroyed by flying debris. Only the lightning reflexes of the pilots managed to get the aircraft out of the way in time.

She saw herself blown to the deck by the explosion and that other firefighter…

What was her name again?

Ross!

…Ross blown clear to the roof’s edge.

Becca’s mouth went dry as she continued watching. She knew what was about to happen next.

She saw her YouTube self suddenly lunge forward, grabbing Ross a split second before a section of the roof collapsed. Now Ross was dangling in empty space, only YouTube Becca keeping her from falling two-hundred feet to the ground.

“Oh my god,” she muttered, continuing to watch, her heart racing. Seeing the events of last night like this was making her realize just how close to dying both her and Ross had come.

“I know!” Krissy said. “It’s all over the fucking world! Like I said, you’re famous!”

Becca put down her iPad.

“I don’t want to be famous!” she replied.

“Too late,” Krissy retorted. “Oh, and by the way, you are a total lesbian icon now!”

Becca wanted that even less! Away from her job, she wanted a nice quiet life of baking, reading and putting up with Mrs. O’Leary trying to smother her in her sleep. Meeting a nice woman someday would be ideal, too. But all of this other shit…

Krissy chuckled.

“You really ought to see what the Lesbianverse is saying about you on Twitter and Facebook! You have some serious fans!”

“Look, would you forget about that and come get me! I got half the world’s press camped outside my front door and I want to get out of here!”

“Really? That is so cool!”
