“A testing of the waters,” Alex countered, her dark eyes searching her face.
“You just want me for that spousal privilege so I can’t be compelled to testify against you,” she countered as her nerves forced her into a making a joke.
Alex laughed. “I think I’ve already seen that you’re not a snitch.”
Charlotte pulled her down into an intense, penetrating kiss. She hoped Alex understood her meaning. If she proposed, Charlotte’s answer would be yes.
“Oye,” Frania shouted from where she stood over them with her hands on her square hips. “You two can make out at home. Get up and dance!”
Jayson appeared behind Frania with his hand extended.
“Come on, Alex. I’ve got the first dance!”
Easing out of her lap, Alex took his hand and let herself be led to where her family was already jumping and thrashing in rhythm to a song pulsing through the speakers.
“Come on.” Frania helped her out of her chair before putting her sweaty arm around Charlotte’s perspiring shoulder. “Thank you for bringing me,” she said before giving her a squeeze as they reached the fire. “It’s the trip of
a lifetime,” she added, disappearing before Charlotte could say anything in return. The action was by design.
As she neared them, Jayson reached for Charlotte’s hand, twirling her around until she spun into his arms, and he dipped her.
“Like that?” he asked, his question pointed at Alex, who was analyzing his moves.
“Too many turns,” Alex decided. Charlotte’s spinning head agreed. “It’s more liked this.”
Alex extended her hand, which Charlotte readily accepted.
With a strong yank, she pulled her in, her arm curling around Charlotte’s waist. In complete control, Alex dipped her back and kissed her, much to the delight of the crowd.
“That’s how you get the girl,” she said, gaze fixed on Charlotte.
And she was right.
