Dallas was folding her clothes back into her suitcase.
Somehow, the ones she’d taken out wouldn’t fit back in. It was
funny how it worked that way, like a crappy magic trick with a
less than mediocre ending. Like putting a rabbit into a hat, but
finding out the hat was too small and actually getting it stuck
so that it only went halfway in and then pulling it back out and
trying again and again while everyone was wa
tching, waiting
for shit to actually happen properly.
“Come on you poopy thing,” she hissed as she tried to hold
the sides together with her knee while she used the other to tug
at the zipper. “Oh, you’re a terrible bastard, aren’t you?” She
tugged harder at the zipper. “I should upgrade you, you know.
As soon as I get home, you’re going in the trash.” She felt it
would be too mean to actually pull that off. She didn’t like to
throw things away that other people could actually use.
“Whatever. I’m donating you then.”
The suitcase glared back at her, as though daring her to do
such a heinous thing. It was her favorite one. Bright yellow
with big flowers printed all over it. It might not be everyone’s
flavour, but it was easy to spot on a baggage carousel and that
was what mattered.
“Yeah, I know that you might be easy to find, but that’s not
cutting it anymore. I’m going to switch to a token color and tie
something bright around the handle like everyone else does.
What’s that? What if it falls off and I have to contend with
forty others of the same variety? Hmm. Well, I guess you have
a point.”
Dallas realized she was talking to a freaking suitcase, but
maybe that was no crazier than what had gone down the past
