trying to upset you here tone, but what you say and what I say

“I don’t know. I guess so.”
“Hmm.” Danica said.
“Hmm.” Billy uttered around yet another mouthful.
“Hmm.” Quinn put in, because why not join them?
“Hmm.” Danica repeated.
Billy pulled out his phone and pretended to be surprised at
the time. “I should get going. Have some work I have to do at
home tonight.”
“You’re a security guard,” Danica protested. “What work
could you possibly have to do at home?”
Billy shrugged non-committedly. “Security stuff?” He
grabbed his box of pizza, which was now half gone, tucked in
the cardboard ends and grinned at Quinn. “Thanks for the
pizza. And the chat.”
Quinn looked pleadingly at Danica after Billy just walked
right out of her place with his dinner. Danica just shrugged.
“Don’t look at me. I don’t know what to do. This is a new
one. I’d say leave things be, but I don’t know if I could do that
if I were you.”
“You wouldn’t do that if you were me. You wouldn’t do it
if you were you.”
Danica pulled Billy’s shrugging routine, folded up the box
she hadn’t even taken any pizza out of yet, and gave Quinn
another slightly confused, horribly sorry look. “I don’t know,”
she said again. “But I guess I should go too. Give you some
time to think about it. If Dallas isn’t gone yet, then she
probably will be soon. I’m here. If you want to call or text,
I’ve got your back.”
