done it.” Danica wasn’t being mean. She was just curious.

“Okay.” Quinn set her hands on the island that they were

clustered around. Billy stopped chewing, which resulted in his

face looking like a chipmunk. Danica’s hand froze on its way

to get her first slice of pizza out of the box. It was Quinn’s

tone that did it.

“mpfhkay?” Billy asked.

“Okay?” Danica seconded.

“Okay,” Quinn whispered. “Okay, no, I did have to call

you here. I’m just trying to sort through how to tell you what

happened, because it’s confusing to me even.”

Danica and Billy both waited. Billy did chew what was in

his mouth and swallowed audibly. Danica declined eating

anything while she waited.

“She talked to me after we signed the papers today. It got

heated. In the middle of the sidewalk. She said we had things

to say to each other, but I didn’t exactly agree. I thought that

there was lots to say years ago, but nothing now. She didn’t

agree with that. She told me why she broke up with me.”

“Because she was a biotch?” Billy suggested.

“No. No.” Quinn shook her head. “I know that we just had

what she told me to go on. That she’d changed her mind about

how she was feeling. That she was worried she’d ruined our

friendship and that she was young and she had made a

mistake. That it was basically just infatuation and she fell out

of it.”

“And then she left and never looked back,” Billy said

accusingly.

“She did. But that wasn’t it. Actually, that wasn’t any of it.

All of it. Whatever. She told me today that she lied to me.”
