Dallas had to wonder if maybe it was intentional. But no.
Jim was a lawyer. He couldn’t do that. Even if Willford
planned this, Jim couldn’t act on it. He couldn’t withhold
information if he knew about it, but who could forget a clause
like that? Sure he was probably busy dealing with other clients
and even dealing with just Willford’s will.
She did realize that this was all Willford. She’d suspected
it earlier, when Jim called her the first time. That Willford left
her the money just to bring her back to Kansas. What did that
actually mean? That Quinn hadn’t moved on? That Willford
hadn’t forgotten about Dallas? Did he think that there was a
possibility that they could make up after ten years just because
they had to be in the same room to sign a few papers? It would
probably have the opposite effect. Dallas didn’t have Quinn’s
number and even if she did, she would never call it. She hadn’t
come back to Kansas armed with a shovel to dig up the past.
She didn’t want to dig up the past. She just wanted to get that
money, get back home, and give it to people who needed it
more than she did.
She thought that was the right thing to do, but as she said
goodbye to Jim, went back down to the main floor, signed out
at the security desk, and started the long, confusing walk back
to her car, she realized that she had no idea what the right
thing was.
She hadn’t known what was right ten years ago.
Apparently time didn’t offer clarity at all.
