“Maybe too good. I kept my secrets for a long time and all

it did was hurt everyone.”

Quinn nodded, and her arms and shoulders bobbed with

the movement. Her elbows slid an inch back and forth along

the countertop. “So what are you going to say about me? Do

we even know what we’re doing? It seems like this just made

way more questions than you would have had to answer

before.”

“It might have, but that’s alright. I’ll figure it out. I- I hope

I can. I- I guess that depends on what you want to do. I know

this kind of just happened. You probably thought you’d never

see me again. I thought the same. I’m so glad that your

grandpa made that will. That he gave us one last chance. I

know that’s what he was thinking when he did it. He put that

condition in that we had to sign together. He gave us this

chance and I want to make the most of it.”

“I know.” Quinn swallowed thickly. She drummed her

fingers on the countertop so that her short nails clicked loudly.

“We live in two different cities, though.”

“I know, but that’s not insurmountable, is it? With

technology now? Would that be good enough until I could visit

again? Or you could come to Tampa?”

“I- I don’t know. I want to say it would be, but…”

“But how can you tell the future? I know. I’m not asking

you to do that. I’m just wondering if you would like give it a

shot. If not, I can respect that. It would be hard. But if you do,

then who knows. Lots of people do the distance thing. It

doesn’t work out for everyone, but I’m not willing to leave
