and there really is something to explain. I wasn’t lying to

you. It might not have been entirely my choice to leave last

time, but it is this time and my parents have nothing to do

with it. I don’t want you to think badly of them. They

might have made some mistakes, but this one was all on

me.

There was another right after that.

We need to talk. I do have a flight to catch, but I’m

not leaving like last time. I’m not going to abandon you. I

know you’re upset, but can we please talk? Tomorrow? I

don’t have much time left here and I don’t want to waste

what I do have.

Another text popped up while Quinn was reading the

first two.

I know you think that I won’t fight for you, but I

will. Maybe we were never meant to happen again, but it

did, and I don’t think it was a mistake. We might live in

different cities, but if we want the same thing, can’t we

make it happen somehow?

Quinn’s hand shook. She realized that Danica was

leaning in, reading the texts too. Quinn didn’t stop her or angle

her phone away. Danica might as well read them. She knew

everything else.

“I’m sorry you’re in here with me right now instead of

out there with your friends. It’s your birthday. You shouldn’t

have shitty memories of it.”

“I’m not sorry. And I won’t.” Danica indicated the

phone. “Are you going to respond? Maybe you did

misunderstand her. Maybe she was telling the truth about

being overwhelmed and not wanting to talk to a lot of people
