cake until she confesses to whatever she said that hurt you.
Again. I know something happened. Please tell me what it is.”
“No.” Quinn stared at her feet so she didn’t have to look at
Danica.
“Did she hurt you?”
“No. How could she? I knew that nothing was different.
That nothing had changed. That we couldn’t just pick up after
ten years and go on. She doesn’t even live here.”
“But you- that didn’t- I…” Danica trailed off into silence.
The bathroom was overly quiet until Danica walked over and
sat down on the edge of the tub. She took Quinn’s hand and
squeezed it. “Quinn. Are you still in love with her?”
“What/” Quinn snatched her hand back. “Why would you
say that?”
“Well, because. It’s been a long time, and I know you’ve
gone on with your life, but all your relationships were just…
Lacking.”
“Thanks. Thanks so much, Danica. That’s exactly what I
need to hear right now.” Quinn resisted the urge to jump up
and flee the bathroom. The only thing that stopped her was
that she knew Danica wouldn’t leave her alone in her
misguided, sisterly quest to try and save her from herself if she
did.
“I don’t mean it that way. I just know that you’ve never
really fallen in love with someone again. I can see you trying.
You think that you hide it well because you’re you. Maybe
Mom and Dad don’t know. Billy certainly doesn’t, but we’re
close. We’ve always been close. We’re sisters, and I’ve
watched you. I can tell that it wasn’t the same for you with
anyone else after- after her.”
