picked a waffle cone, the large edges were good for catching

the drips. When she looked over at Dallas, who stood just a

little off to the side as though she still wasn’t entirely sure of

her welcome, her ice cream was already half gone.

When the sweet grape and bubble gum flavour hit her

tongue, Quinn’s left eyelid twitched. It was good. Actually. It

didn’t taste like grape cough syrup at all.

“Dallas?”

Dallas turned at her name. Danica was the one who had

said it and now Quinn’s other eye twitched. Her sister was

smiling though, and Danica never delivered anything evil with

a smile. She wasn’t devious like that.

“You’re coming tonight, right? Billy wants his hat back.”

Dallas’ eyes swept to Quinn. They burned with emotion,

and Quinn’s whole body started to burn in response. She

couldn’t help that whenever she looked at Dallas the lust and

desire were pretty much automatic. So was the emotion. That

was the problem. Quinn wanted to be tough. She wanted to

shut Dallas out, but Dallas was unshutoutable.

Quinn waited. She felt like she could barely breathe, let

alone think of even touching her ice cream again. Her cone

kept collecting all the melted grapey, bubble gum goodness

while the hot summer sun kept right on melting it.

No one except Danica, Quinn, and Dallas seemed to feel

the tension. They were locked in a triangle of awkward stares,

but then Dallas nodded and touched the brim of Billy’s nasty

hat. “I’m coming,” she promised.

Quinn just hoped her sigh of relief wasn’t premature or

short lived.
