of Kansas, before she or Danica did, but that was wishful
thinking. She was still riding her high from the win at the flea
market, and from being so close to Dallas again, even after she
arrived at the ice cream shop.
She stood looking out the window while Danica stood
beside her. “Quinn… There’s something you haven’t told me.”
Danica elbowed her in the side. “Please tell me you didn’t!”
“Didn’t what?”
“Didn’t- you know. Is that why you wanted her to come to
the flea market this morning?”
“That was for old times’ sake.” Quinn bit down on the tip
of her tongue until it started to tingle. “She was here. I
extended the invite when I mentioned that it was your
birthday. I thought she’d enjoy it. It’s a good ice breaker
before she gets to Mom and Dad’s tonight. That’s gotta be
nerve wracking for her, even if I talked to them already.”
“I said she could come, in the effort of being nice,” Danica
started. She shot Quinn another sidelong look that made
Quinn’s skin feel like it was sizzling.
“I know.”
“But there is something, isn’t there?”
“Nope. I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Quinn
lifted the button that was pinned to her sweater. “Tell it to the
mustache wearing cow.”
“That button is ridiculous.” By button, Quinn was sure that
her sister actually meant her.
“It’s awesome though. It won me free ice cream. I don’t
know if I’ll ever take it off. I’m sure I’ll get lots of
compliments on it.”
“Comments, maybe. Compliments might be a stretch.”
