degree.

She plugged away for a good couple of hours. Luckily, her phone didn’t

ring. It wasn’t on silent and she couldn’t reach it to switch it over.

When the door cracked open, Christina looked up. She put a finger to

her lips, but it was Taylor, and she must have had an intrinsic instinct that

allowed her to be extra silent. She did look surprised when she saw Chloe

cuddled up against Christina’s side. Her gaze darted up from Chloe to

Christina’s face.

“I just got a call,” Taylor whispered, but her tone was urgent. She

stepped inside and Christina put her tablet aside. She noticed the lines

bracketing Taylor’s eyes and lips. Something was wrong. “From one of my

friends. She’s been in a car accident. It’s not serious, but her neck is pretty

sore, and she wants to go get checked out. They’re towing her car and she’s

going to take a cab to the hospital. She normally picks her son up from

school.” She looked back at Chloe

and chewed her lip. “God, I hate to wake

her up when she needs to rest. She’s going to have to be in the car for hours

by the time I get Joseph and get to the hospital. Shit. Wait. If Adriana gets

admitted, I can’t bring Chloe in there. She did say that they’ve all had

chicken pox already so she wasn’t worried about that, but I can’t just leave

Chloe in the car while I take Joseph in there. Juliana, Adriana’s partner, has

her phone off since she’s in meetings until late tonight.” Taylor reached up

and brushed an arm over her forehead. She kept looking at Chloe, obviously

trying to think of a solution.

“I can watch her.” Christina wasn’t sure which one of them was more

shocked at the suggestion. Taylor’s brows nearly jumped straight into the

ceiling tiles.

“It would be hours before I could get back here. I don’t know how late

I’d be. Maybe really late, if Adriana is at the hospital for a long time or if

she gets admitted.”
