ask another person if they were single for as long as she lived,
let alone marry one of them.
Chapter 4
Dani
After Little Miss Summer walked out of the shop, Dani found
Andi at the front, sorting through mail. Her hands moved
deftly, but as soon as she sensed Dani, she paused. Dani
braced herself.
“You shouldn’t have done that,” Andi chided. She went on
slowly working envelopes over, back to the front, front to the
middle, middle over to the back. The silent slick, slick, slick of
paper was like a second wordless scolding.
“Done what?” Dani walked over and leaned against the
counter. “I didn’t even read her cards.”
Andi turned, her mouth dropping open. “What the heck took
you so long back there, then? All this time I was out here,
sweating it big time, thinking you were going to scare that girl
so bad she freaked and called the police.”
“The police?” Dani laughed. “Why would she call the
police?”
“I don’t know, Dani! I just wish that you wouldn’t…I don’t
know, that you wouldn’t judge people for coming in here full
of light and sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, it’s okay for
people to be those things. You don’t like the customers who
are all storm clouds and scowls either.”
“So, I shouldn’t run a shop when I don’t like people?” Dani
raised a brow, but Andi knew her better than to assume she
was angry. It took a lot to get Dani there, even on the bad days.
Andi shook her head and set the mail down. “Something
like that. Anyway. It’s the happy people you dislike the most.”
