“To not attract attention,” Roy said inside my head. “We’ll need to work on that. It’s not as easy as it looks.”

The screech of tyres caused me to hold my breath. Headlights flashed through the bushes from the dirt road. We paused, half hidden behind the bushes. The noise of a car door slamming ripped through the twilight. Footfalls followed. Despite the fact that the sounds reached my ears clearly, the men had to be several yards from us.

Pierre waved us closer with a paw. He went to the right while Roy and I walked left of the building where there was more cover for our large beast.

“We don’t have much time,” Roy said. “I think that—”

A gunshot ricocheted from the station. Then another. The Germans were killing their own people to start a war.

“Here.” Roy opened the panel. Thank goodness that my anxiety wasn’t affecting our coordination. “The switch.”

Hooking a claw on the switch, I ripped it off the panel. Nothing happened, but heck, there were half a dozen switches. We yanked them off, broken wires and plaster coming out in the process. The lights on the top of the antenna blinked and switched off, but did it mean that the antenna didn’t work? Well, I had to trust Pierre’s instructions. He was supposed to cut the wires on the other side, so perhaps that would be enough. Everything was silent in the woods, but loud voices came from the station. Roy and I straightened a few inches.

“Be quick,” a man yelled in German.

“The instructions are in Polish,” another man said. “And we’re losing power.”

Curses and a couple of gunshots covered the voices. Footsteps padded from the station. A glimmer of golden fur flashed when Pierre waved us to follow him, his tail slashing the air.

But I hesitated. “We can catch them. Stop them for good,” I said.

“And then what? The Nazis will know we’ve sabotaged their plan and send another team,” Roy said. “Let them think everything went well. We’ll have more time to figure out their next move. We’ll catch them, Kristin. Just not tonight.”
