“Who was that guy?”I ask once the black SUV disappears around the corner and the spatula crew has relaxed and gone back inside the house.
“That was the uncle who taught me how to count cards.” Her words are distant, like she’s as much of a ghost of her past as Spade. Indeed, she sounds as if the life has been sucked out of her.
I cover her hand in mine. “Wow. Let’s pray we never meet the one who taught you how to pour concrete.”
She smirks. “I don’t think they’ll be bothering us anymore.”
“How do you know?”
Smiling up at me, she lifts one shoulder. “I have a good feeling about the future. For once.”
I kiss her forehead and let go of a heavy breath.
“I got you, Mila.”
“I believe that’s the truth.”
