“Shut the feck up, wean,” Da grits out.

Camdyn tosses two fingers at us and grabs his notebook. “Alright, I get it. I’m different. But you all will see things my way, soon enough.”

While he strolls toward the stairs, I say, “Ewan’s not a normal guy, and the two of ye know it. He’s Erika’s da. Killing him will break her.”

My bràthair stops at the bottom of the staircase and does an about-face. “That bitch looks like she’d kill him herself half the time. How about this for a fascinating plot twist? Erika plus parenticide equals problem over.Woah, bro, I solved this shit real quick.”

Our father’s hand comes down onto the table. “That’s not our way of thinking, Camdyn. For the time being, I’ll rest better with Leith’s updates. We all agree, Ewan has nae close bràthairs. All his communications are taped. I’m in Ewan’s heid, far as I’m concerned.”

“That ain’t our way of thinking either, Da.” I turn the tables on him. Feck, he’d nearly seen the light if it weren’t for Camdyn’s vicious suggestions. “Listen, ye taught me that if I pick up a fecking gun, use it. Don’t just shoot a lad. A few weeks ago, Leith took a life. I asked my bràthair, did the shot to the fecking heid kill the nugget, seeing how the guy was shot in the knee too.”

Da shifts his stance, still agitated.

“From that point, Leith made a mistake after mistake. American logic.” I glance at Camdyn. “For over a hunner years, Clan MacKenzie and Clan McFarland have trusted each other. There are only two ways this can go, Da. A war or we part ties.” I click my tongue. “Part all ties, Da. Ain’t nae hacking into Ewan’s shite, trying to figure out if he means us harm.”

I tell myself that I can’t be indecisive. Justice once saw me as a cruel motherfecker who murdered in cold blood. But I’ve only taken a lad’s life on orders except on the rare occasion some bampot crossed me. Maybe I’m compromised like my wee bràthair just said. I heave a heavy sigh. “Da, Ewan McFarland’s nae longer yer bràthairfuil. Wit’s it gonna be, war or nae?”
