It made no sense no matter how he looked at it. He had no motive and no track record saying that he was notorious for it. Sure, he’d had one-night stands or casual sex that he left afterward. But that didn’t signify that he was willing to take the time seducing someone in order to get into their pants.

If he was that desperate for a lay, he would’ve gone to the strip club.

Rolling his eyes, Henry made his way up the few blocks to Olivia’s apartment. Spotting it just up the road and across the street from him.

He’d bang on her door until she opened it. Even if it took all day.

“Henry?”

Recognizing the voice, he turned to look back over his shoulder, noticing Gerri Wilder looking at him curiously.

He slowed to a stop. “Oh, hello, Gerri.”

She beamed at him. “How are you? You look pissed.”

He snorted. “What gave me away?”

“Your face, mostly.”

That almost made him laugh. “Look, I’d stay in chat, but I need to …”

“Oh great!” she cut him off, waving her hand toward herself. “I was just heading into the cafe.”

“What? No, Gerri. I need to …”

“Come on, Henry.” She started walking away. “Quick, quick! I don’t want to lose my favorite spot.”

He gave her an odd look, watching her walk away from him. It made him press his lips together and look over his shoulder at Olivia’s apartment building.

She’d most likely stay in today, so he supposed there was no harm in taking the twenty minutes to have coffee with Gerri before heading back over again.

Giving in, Henry reluctantly followed after Gerri, jogging to catch up with her quick strides. She pulled open the door to a coffee shop only a few hundred yards from where they’d caught up with each other, holding it open for him.

He snorted at her and grabbed hold of the door. “In you go.”

She laughed. “Why, thank you.”

He smiled a little and let the door swing closed behind him. The cafe was small and quaint, giving him that family-owned vibe that is popular in this city nowadays.

After ordering them both a small cup of coffee, Gerri led him to a small table by a large window that streamed in the daylight. She sat in her chair and immediately inhaled a large sip of her coffee.

It made him chuckle while he sat across from her.

“Thirsty?”

“You have no idea.”

He put his hands around his own cup, bringing back memories of his first date with Olivia only a little while ago. They’d been in a cafe very similar to this, going back and forth while they debated their differences. It’d felt like such a lifetime ago, but now it seemed like a bitter memory.

“Tell me what’s on your mind, Henry? You look glum.”

He let out a grunt and stared down into his dark roast.

“Olivia’s blocked me.”

“On the phone?”

He nodded.
