He reached for her, trying to draw her into his arms. She didn’t try to stop him, but she didn’t open her arms to him either. He couldn’t bear the sight of her tears and tried again to comfort her with his embrace.
This time, she let him fold her gently against his chest. Her body shuddered with sobs, and tears poured from her eyes. Olivia’s hands came up and pressed against him before she clenched them into fists, gripping his shirt with both hands as she gasped as she shuddered under the force of her grief.
Henry tightened his arms around her, trying to make her feel safe. Her pain affected him deeply. He swore that he would never let anything hurt her ever again. His heart and mind came together, finally, in perfect harmony.
I am never letting her go.
He rested his cheek against her hair and let her cry. He gently stroked the back of her head, waiting for the storm of grief to pass. He hadn’t intended any of this, and he felt terrible to have triggered her loss, but it had certainly clarified things for him.
She was part of him now, whether he wanted to admit it or not.
