Ash let go of me with one arm, and the room went silent a moment later.

“Better?” he asked softly.

I nodded against his neck.

“Do you want to skip the next one? Maybe watch a slasher flick instead?”

“No. I need to get over these silly fears.”

“And you think shock therapy is the way to go?”

“Pretty sure this is exposure therapy.”

“Whatever it is, it’s going to make you pee my bed if we keep doing it.”

“I probably should pee before we start the next one. Just in case.” I breathed him in again, his familiar scent calming some of the noise in my head. “You smell good.”

“So do you.” He ran his nose through my hair. “Feel good too.”

“Ash?”

“Hmmmm?”

“Are we…”

“Are we what?”

“Never mind.”

Something had been bothering me for the past few days, but now wasn’t the time to bring it up. Not when things were so good between us.

“No, tell me.” He peeled me off his body and held me just far enough back he could look into my eyes. “What were you going to say?”

“Are we together?” My voice was barely louder than a whisper, and a flutter of nerves shot through me.

“Do you want us to be?”

“I… Do you?”

He studied me, like he was trying to read something in my eyes.

“I mean, we can just be roommates who screw each other,” I said hastily as my stomach flip-flopped. “This doesn’t have to be a thing or anything.”

I shouldn’t have said anything, not when things were going so well.

“I think we’re past pretending that’s all we are to each other.” He lowered his gaze to my lips.

“Really?”

He nodded.

“But we’ve never…”

“Never what?”

“Nothing. I’m just going to go die now.” I tried to pull away, but he kept hold of me, keeping me in place.

“Jules.”
