I make myself move, pushing past the icy feeling in my legs and the shivering chill paralyzing my spine.
I walk toward them with the sandwiches and set the tray down on the table.
The tall man smiles wide and his friend looks at me, giving me a once over.
“Look who it is,” the tall man says and looks at Lucca. “We’ll have her later again.”
My blood runs cold and hope leaves me when Lucca smiles.
“Gonna cost you,” Lucca intones in a sing-song voice.
“How much?” the tall man asks.
“Ten g’s.”
Bastard. That was how much Dad owed, how much I cost.
God in heaven…how much has this bastard made from me in the time I’ve been here?
Now I’m being sold again for a debt that will never fully be repaid.
Not ever.
Last time these men had me they nearly killed me.
Maybe this time they will.
Chapter Six
Dante
I gaze down at the headless body of Antonio Monroe and flick my long reach knife.
He won’t be bothering Lucca or anybody else again.
He’s been eliminated and he’s the first kill I’ve done where I question myself and my actions.
Lucca killed his nephew, Alfonse, and the man wanted vengeance. There’s no wrong in that.
He came for Lucca even though he would have known I’d come for him. Nobody messes with the Marchesis’ and gets away with it. He still came though hoping for vengeance even if it cost him his life.
“Sorry,” I say to the headless body. His head fell down the ditch when I hacked it off.
“What now boss?” Reece, my capo asks.
“Get the cleanup crew to sort it. I’m done here,” I answer, throwing my knife down like I’m truly done.
They can take that too. I won’t clean Antonio’s blood off it.
Part of me wishes I never got to him before he had the chance to do what he wanted to do to Lucca. If he had I would have dropped it, dropped my target on his back.
I’ve been different from the other night. The last night I spent with Megan.
Something has changed within me, and I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing.
It’s opened the door to emotion a man like me shouldn’t entertain.
She did this to me…
