“Why do I get the feeling my preference is for burned grilled cheese because I burned it every time?”

“Not a bad guess. Maybe your memories are coming back.” I took another bite, finishing my first half sandwich. “Or you always burned it because you liked it that way. Which came first, the burn or the preference for burn?”

Her eyes twinkled, and she took a huge bite. “Thanks for taking all this time for me, Jeremy. Don’t you have a job?”

“I do.”

“How can you take this much time off?”

“I’m the boss.”

“But doesn’t that mean you have more responsibility, not less?”

It did, but Mark was handling it. We were between major deals. I’d put off the Palisades Urgent Care Group, the Optimal Medical Properties request, and the New Reach Health people, telling them I’d contact them soon. They had all agreed to wait to hear from me. Mark didn’t like it, but I’d just made Mark a very rich man, so he didn’t have a lot of room to complain.

“Don’t worry about it. When it’s time for me to go back to work, I will.”

Finally, she nodded, as if allowing me to keep some things to myself. “Let’s have dinner together again tomorrow.”
