“You do infuriate me, so I’m not entirely sure what that makes you,” he says, tapping a finger against his jaw lightly.

“I’m going to settle for begrudging roommates and co-workers for now. Don’t you agree?” I declare.

“I’m fine with that,” he confirms, slumping against the chair, hands knotted behind his head. “I’ll try my best to tolerate you.”

“I’m sure after today it won’t be such a difficult task.”

“If you keep up with your sarcasm, it will be.”

“Well, you’re not the easiest person to be around either.”

My expression is fierce when I snap back at him.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t help with that,” Kayden tells me grimly. “Looks like we’re stuck with each other until we each get what we want.”

I can already sense the disjointedness between us as he allows his words to ring in the air. A sinking feeling spreads across my stomach and I frown, knowing all too well that it’s not going to be easy—getting what we both want.
