Agent Reyes' hand slipped from my chest, bringing me back into the present as he locked the door behind me. The imprint of his hand was still palpable against my neck, leaving behind what could have been an easy out for us both.

He paused for a moment, standing still and quiet.

“Give me your bobby-pin.”

Shit.

My mouth parted to spew a fib. “And don’t lie to me that you don’t have one,” Reyes sliced me off. “There’s only one way you got out of this room. Hair pin. Now.”

I could already see I wouldn’t be winning this one, and my resolve sank fast. With a grumble, I twisted my fingers behind my ear until I found the bobby-pin and discarded it into his waiting hand.

His long fingers folded over the tiny black pin while his other hand plucked me away from the door. I stumbled a few feet into the room, scowling at him over my shoulder as I watched him break the thing in half.

Fuck this fucking day.

“Now, where’d you go on your little outing?” he interrogated, his hurricane temper quieted in place of sham professionalism.

“Gambling. Like I said I wanted to.”

Tired eyes met mine. “With what money?”

“You should know there’s plenty of lonely men in Vegas just waiting for a single girl to sink their money into.”

Reyes smoothed his hands over his face, still trying to wake himself up from the stupor I’d helped him into. “You know that’s dangerous, right? Going off with strange men. I don’t have to tell you what your father clearly left out of his parenting seminars, right?

“No, Dad. You don’t have to parent me. I’m old enough to know what’s bad for me.”

The attractive angles of his face intensified as he lowered his chin, dark eyes peeking out beneath thick brows.

“Then I suggest you stay away from it.”

“Now what’s the fun in that?”

“Life isn’t about having fun.” I cut away from him, setting my sights on the balcony outside the room, showing off the black sky glowing with artificial life down below. Maybe I could find a way out? Onto a ledge, into another room, away from Agent Reyes’ and Demitri’s watchful eyes.

Just as a plan began to weave together in my head, body heat crept up along my back, and my attention prickled into action just a second too late.

“It’s about following the goddamn rules,” Agent Reyes voiced behind me.

The click of metal slapped around my wrists, and I jumped at their cold arrival. Warmth washed my shoulder as his face dipped beside me, his whisky voice finding my ear and whispering against it.

“I win.”
