“I don’t suppose you booked a hotel,” she asks, her tone clipped. Any familiarity they shared gone.

Seth crosses his arms and arches a brow. “Do I need to?”

“I only have one bedroom.”

He lifts a palm. “Hey, it’s fine. I sleep in a bus. I can survive a couch.”

She smiles. But it’s nervous. Uncomfortable.

Seth wonders how they got here. Something changed at their last encounter. In him and in Lacey. There was no sex, and yet it was still intimate. And he’s the one wanting to give in, goddamn, does he want to give in, while Lacey’s got a pitchfork between them sharpened to the hilt.

“Relax, Lace,” Seth says, stretching out where he sits. “Ain’t gonna cramp your style. Just gonna change that lock you got there and then settle in for the night. Won’t even take off my boots.”

“Okay.” She stands, slipping her phone into her palm. “I’ll set out a pillow and some blankets.”

With that, she gives him a tight smile and then turns and walks down the hall without looking back.
