Itwist off the cap on my beer and kick my feet up on the coffee table. All day I’ve been trying to force the images of Brooklyn on her knees in front of me out of my head. I even second-guess if it actually happened. For being the bossy woman who told me off just a few days ago on my porch, she was quick to let me take control.

I feel my cock twitch at the thought. I should have pushed her further—bent her over and taken her.

“Fuck,” I mutter as I down half the beer in one gulp. Why the hell did I let myself know how good she was at sucking cock? Even with those full hips and an ass you want to sink your teeth into, I was doing a damn good job of convincing myself that she was nothing more than a pretty face.

Three quick knocks on the front door bring me out of my head. I glance at the clock, and it’s nearly 9 p.m. The knocks sound again and I walk to the front door.

“You didn’t call me back,” Brooklyn snaps before I even have the door fully open.

“‘Cause I ain’t doin’ it.” I take another drink of beer. I know what she’s referring to—that ridiculous bachelor auction. “Nice try telling me you already signed me up to do it, though, as if that would change my mind.”

She nods but—surprisingly—doesn’t press the issue.

“What’s that smaller house on your property?”

“My old house.” I lean against the door frame, letting her know I have no intention of inviting her inside. I’m a pretty disciplined man, but I know if I let her come in this house after what happened today, she’ll be on her back, her knees, her side, and any other position I can bend her in.

“Lived there while we constructed this one. It’s the original house my dad lived in before he built the house he’s in now. Why?”

“You ever think of renting it out on Airbnb or Vrbo? Bet you could book it out a year at a time.”

“And why would I want to do that?”

She shrugs. “Could be a good source of passive income. Maybe help cover your mortgage on this house.”

“Don’t have a mortgage on this house, darlin’. It’s paid for. Trust me, the last thing I want is a bunch of tourists stomping around my land, disrupting my cattle, and filming their TikToks or whatever.”

A smile spreads slowly across her lips. “You remembered TikTok.” We both chuckle. “You’re right, it would be annoying to have strangers all over your private space.”

I should tell her it’s late and I need to head to bed soon, but I don’t want her to leave. I like this—whatever this is right now. Just talking to her about nothing.

“Can I see it?”

“Right now?”

She nods her head.

“Why? Needs some work,” I lie, hoping it will deter her from wanting to see it.

“Well, if you didn’t notice, I’m still living out of suitcases in the motel. I don’t want to lease an apartment in town. I want my own space, ya know? Plus, out here I feel like it’s that true Colorado experience. Remote and off-grid.”

That makes me laugh. “You know it has Wi-Fi and cable hookups, right? Not exactly roughing it. If you want that experience, I’m sure I can let you borrow a horse and tent to go up in the mountains.”

“Come on, humor me.” She stares at me for a moment, and against my better judgment, I give in.

“Let me grab the keys and my boots.” I walk back to the door a minute later and we head down the stairs of the front porch to the driveway. “We’ll just cut across the field,” I motion toward where I’m heading.

We’re about 10 steps in when I look back to check which shoes she’s wearing. “You need some boots if you’re gonna be stomping around out here. Need to protect your ankles from the snakes.”

“Snakes?” she yelps and grabs my arm, looking around frantically.

“Yeah, rattlesnakes like to hide out in the fields sometimes.” She looks at me, petrified—her big round eyes unblinking. “Get on my back.”

I don’t have to tell her twice. I squat down and help her scoot herself into a piggyback position. I focus my attention on each step I take so I don’t trip in the darkness. I’m also trying my hardest not to notice the heat radiating from her thighs, which are wrapped tightly around my body.

When we approach the house, I slide her down my back and pull the keys from my pocket.
