“I feel for you.” Afton shakes his head as he follows me to the house.
“Don’t worry, I have the menu picked out for you, and they won’t mess it up.” Shane grins, like he overheard our conversation.
“How did you know what we were talking about?”
“Carlton just texted me. I made step-by-step instructions. I don’t think they can mess that up.”
“You have seen that show called Nailed It, right?” Afton asks.
“Funny show.” Shane chuckles. We binge-watched it one day before Snow showed back up. It really is a funny show.
“Oh, you want him to suffer?” Afton pats my back.
“Fuck off,” I grumble with a smile.
“It won’t be that bad,” Snow says as she and Ariel enter the kitchen.
“You’re not eating it,” I point out to her.
“They’re allowed one person to help them out—a professional,” she replies with a gentle squeeze to my arm. “Shane, Ever, Austin, and Anne are all here. I’m here.”
“You’re not a professional,” I tell her.
She shrugs. “No, but to them, I will be. Shane’s taught me enough.”
“This makes me feel a little better,” I admit.
“See, it will all work out.” Snow stands on her tiptoes and kisses my cheek.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” Ariel winks before heading out the door.
Snow blushes but doesn’t say anything, just makes sandwiches for the others.
“Wait, should Ever be on her feet? She’s about to pop.”
“Memphis will be here. He’s a mother hen, if I ever saw one.” Shane guffaws, though everyone understands he’s concerned about his daughter as well. “And she’ll sit the whole time. She still has a couple more months.”
“Oh, okay.” I take a seat at the table, and Snow hands me a beer.
“Should I go?” Afton asks.
“You should stay,” Shane says, surprising us both.
“Okay.” Afton shrugs as Snow hands him a beer.
“It’s not even noon.” Afton looks shocked we’re serving alcohol in the middle of the day. He doesn’t know the half of it.
“Have you ever watched the show?” Snow asks.
“No, I haven’t.” Afton shakes his head, clearly amused.
Shane snorts. “You’ll understand by day three.”
“It’ll get worse,” I agree, raising my own drink in commiseration.
“Can’t wait.” Afton lifts the beer to his lips and takes a long pull.
I just want it to be over with.
