Keegan tells his child how much he loves him. Or her, he is quick to add. How he can’t wait to meet them, how they will make our family complete, and how much he loves their mama.
I was afraid of how he might react, but I realize now I had nothing to fear. He is a good man who loves me, loves the life we’ve built, loves our friends, and I know he will love our child. The awe in his voice as he finally speaks confirms that for me.
“A baby. Our baby. I love you so much. You put a spell on me the first time I saw you. You are the magic, not me. I love you.”
Tonight, we don’t take turns handing out candy. He sets the huge bowls out for them to help themselves and turns off the lights. Cuddled together, we watch bad horror films and eat good food. Later, I ask him a question and he answers the same way he did last year.
“Trick oreat?’ I tease in the darkness.
“Oh baby, it isalwayseat.”
