“Damien said he wanted to hire someone that he had been on a few dates with,” I corrected. “He didn’t say that it was you.”

“Surprise,” she said with a smile. “I didn’t know it would work out so well either.”

“Great,” I responded.

“I’m gonna show her the payroll software,” Damien said, leading Meara toward his office.

I watched them go, choking on my frustration. The receptionist looked up at me curiously. She was the one who knew everything that went on at the office. If you needed some gossip, she would be the first stop. Yet I knew she was professional enough to refrain from that practice.

She wanted to know what had just happened, but she kept her mouth shut. I appreciated it. I didn’t want to broadcast my frustration all over the office. So what if Damien hired his ex and she just happened to be the woman I was interested in?

Stalking back to my office, I grabbed my car keys and my wallet. A good weight-lifting session should take my mind off Meara and Damien. I didn’t want to be in competition with any of my partners. It wasn’t good for business, and it wasn’t good for my state of mind.

I broke out of the office, feeling a fire burning in my soul. It wasn’t fair. Why should he get to have all the fun? Setting my jaw, I mustered my determination, peeling out of the parking lot and into the afternoon.
