One of the conference rooms functioned as a shared workspace for the interns. There were cubicles facing each of the walls. The other conference room was for client meetings and group work. We also had a staffed reception desk and a small waiting area complete with a water station and a Keurig machine.

Sean and Kent kept offices across the hall from each other near the reception area. My office was in the back. We each had windows, but mine faced a green space with trees and a fountain. Theirs faced various parking lots.

Sean wasn’t on the phone. He wasn’t even doing anything productive. He was watching the stock market ticker and playing trash can basketball. I grinned as I took a seat beside his desk. He pushed a crumpled-up piece of paper at me, and I accepted the challenge, returning to the doorway to bank a shot.

“Beginner’s luck,” Sean swore.

“I’m no beginner,” I said.

“What’s up?”

“Are you bored?”

“No. I’m procrastinating.”

“I’ve got a new intern I wanted to run by you first before extending an offer.”

He frowned. Any of us could hire an intern, and since we started this new project, we wanted to hire on four or five of them. It was strange that I was coming to him directly, and I knew it. A lot of our decisions waited for the weekly or biweekly partners’ meeting. The fact that I’d requested a one-on-one was telling.

“I used to date her,” I explained.

“Ah.” Sean shot another basket, then dug the ball out of the trash. “Are you sure that’s wise?”

“She’s a good worker. I think she’d be good for our firm.”

“But do you really know how she is as a worker?” He gave me a sarcastic smile. “Or were you more focused on other aspects of her personality?”

“Yeah,” I agreed. “I wasn’t giving her a job interview when we were dating. But I know she’d fit in.”

“All right,” Sean sighed. “It’s your funeral if it doesn’t work out.”

“Thanks.” I stood up, leaving him to his game. Walking back to my office, I sat down to craft an email.

Hey Meara, I wrote. I just came across your application. Kent told me he ran into you at Vlad’s party and encouraged you to apply. I’m glad to see you did. Since this is an internship and not a salaried position, there’s some leeway in hiring. We’d like you to come on board. I’m attaching the job offer. I think this will work for all of us and I’m looking forward to seeing you in the near future. Sincerely, Damien Kovak.
