“I thought it was serious. But apparently, he wanted to date other people.”

“And you weren’t okay with that?”

Petra fixed me with a patient grin. “I’m not as adventurous as you are.”

“Sure you are,” I argued.

“I don’t know.”

“You just have to find the right men.”

“Maybe. But he’s not it. Plus, it was really more like he was more interested in someone else and less interested in me, if you know what I mean.”

“So it wasn’t about dating other people, he just didn’t want to continue on with you?” It sounded harsher than I meant, but Petra didn’t take it badly.

“Yeah. It wasn’t like a choice he gave me. He just said goodbye.”

“Did he have the guts to do it in person?” I asked.

“No.”

“Over the phone?”

“No.”

“By text?” I couldn’t believe it. Of all the low down, cowardly things to do, breaking up with someone by text had to be the worst.

“You guessed it.”

“I’m so sorry. Forget what I said about being with him. He’s a loser.”

“That’s what I’m trying to tell myself.”

“You’ll show him,” I predicted. “Success is the best revenge.”

“It sounds like you know what you’re talking about.”

“I’ve been around a little bit,” I said mysteriously.

“So tell me what you’ve been up to,” Petra demanded.

“Are you sure?”

“Of course I’m sure. Quid pro quo.”

I put my cupcake down because it didn’t measure up to hers. She took it and put it on the tray next to all the other perfect ones. Before I could object, she handed me a new one. I attacked it again with the icing, this time doing a better job.

“I slept with Kent,” I revealed triumphantly.

“Nice!” she cheered. “I was wondering when you would cross that threshold.”

“And I had a conversation with all three of them. They’re willing to try having an unconventional relationship.”

“Does that mean you’ll get to be with all three of them?” Petra gasped.

I nodded.

“Together?”
