“Fine, if you must know, he replaced that outfit he ruined the night of the party. That’s all you’re getting. Go home and I’ll see you later.”
“So, what’s up with him coming to the job? He knows where you live. He could have just had it delivered.”
“I guess some men like to apologize in person. Plus, he couldn’t very well ask me out on a date if someone else delivered it.”
“He asked you out? What did you say?”
A huge smile tipped the corners of her mouth as she stood there glowing. She couldn’t help it. That kiss had her floating on cloud nine.
“I reluctantly said yes. I’m just not sure about him. The man knew my sizes. That has me side-eying him.”
“That’s not suspect, PJ. That is Max being thorough. You know he worked his way through college as a retail clerk in a high-end women’s clothing store. I’m sure he just drew off his years of experience outfitting beautiful women.”
“Wait, did you just call me beautiful?”
“I think you’re hearing things. I’m out of here. I have a hot date with Carla. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Strap that thang up. We don’t need no babies running around the penthouse.”
“Don’t say that shit out loud! No to the babies. Later girl.”
PJ finished up her work and rushed out of the office. She had to shower and shave her legs. If that man decided he wanted more than a kiss, she was going to be ready for him. Thank goodness she always kept her bikini area well-groomed. Her mama would be proud.
At eight o’clock on the dot the doorbell at the penthouse rang. When she opened the door, Max stood there wearing his sexy smile and holding the most beautiful bouquet of orange lilies. The way they were arranged, it was obvious the man spent some coins on them. She liked that he was coming at her old school. It was very endearing.
“Good evening, PJ. You look beautiful. These are for you.”
“Thank you,” she said accepting the flowers. “Come in for a second while I put them in water.”
He touched her arm, stopping her from going back into the apartment.
“They are already in water. We need to get going. I don’t want to be late.”
He took the flowers and laid them on the table near the door. Taking her by the hand, he pulled her out into the hallway and watched as she locked the door. They both had silly smiles on their faces as they rode the elevator to the lobby. Neither of them said anything. The air was too thick with sexual attraction, making them both nervous.
He opened the door of his BMW 2 Series and allowed her entry. PJ sank into the buttery leather seat and sighed. She had been looking into getting a similar car and now she was convinced she needed to make that purchase. As Max entered the driver’s side, she was too giddy to keep quiet.
“I love this car! I have been looking at these online for weeks. How does it drive?”
“Like a dream. If you want, I’ll take you out and let you test drive it.”
Shocked, she placed her hand on her imaginary pearls.
“You would let me, a virtual stranger, drive your baby?”
“It’s just a car, PJ. If you wreck it, I have insurance.”
Well damn. That was a surprise. No man she had ever delt with would even consider allowing her to drive their precious vehicle. The way he dismissed her inquiry said a lot about the kind of man he was. He liked nice things but wasn’t consumed by them. This guy just kept impressing her. Maybe she had judged him too quickly.
