“Mom and Dad managed to have several kids. Why can’t we?”

“You certainly need to have a few screws loose if you want more than one kid,” Lee grunted.

“I’m scared what that means for Mom and Dad.”

“Brave and daft.” Lee laughed as he went back behind the counter. “Anyway, what can I get you? Anything with cream?”

“Pretty much. And some gingerbread for the little one.”

“Of course.”

Lee got a box and began to put various cream products into it. He wasn’t about to argue with a woman who had a craving for something; they were not to be reckoned with. While he wasn’t a dad himself, he had seen it happen with plenty of his customers when they had a pregnant partner.

“How are things going with you?” Keith asked. “You mentioned about your neighbor having been dumped and then told to get out of her apartment. Is that still happening?”

“What? Oh, you mean Daisy.” Lee almost dropped a choux bun as he tried to get it out of the display case. “She’s at my place right now.”

“What?”

“You know how expensive everything is around here, and Daisy was only given ten days to find somewhere. So I offered to let her stay with me until she found somewhere of her own.” Lee paused. “I was contemplating letting her have the apartment when I moved, but I don’t think she’s appreciate living across from her ex and his new bitch.”

“That’s an understatement, Lee.” Keith frowned. “So, she’s really left the apartment now? Two days after it happened?”

“You could say that.” Lee chuckled. “Apparently, ninety percent of the belongings were hers as well, so she’s had all of that taken out. Marigold’s guys came along to give us a hand.”

“The ex is coming back to an empty apartment?”

“Yep.”

Keith grinned.

“I’d pay to see his reaction to that. I thought Julia’s ex was bad enough, but Daisy’s had topped him somehow. I didn’t think that was possible.”

“I feel awful for her, Keith. Daisy thought she was living a good life, even if her ex was a bit of a mooch, but it seemed to work for them. And then he goes and does something like that.”

“Well, let’s hope she sticks him with something and makes him regret it.”

Lee was sure that was going to happen. Daisy was very sneaky when she wanted to be. And when she had told him what she had done, Lee had found himself laughing so hard he was sure his face was going to split apart. He liked how methodical she could be when she needed it.

Nick and Elena were going to find out how screwed they were soon.

“So…” Keith prompted.

“So, what?”

“When are you going to tell her?”

Lee frowned. He put the box on the counter and started to fold the lid down.

“Tell who what? What are you talking about?”

“Lee, how well do I know you? You know I’m talking about Daisy and how you feel about her.”

Lee paused. He had never said anything about how he felt to Keith, even though they shared everything. He chose his words carefully.

“What makes you think I feel anything for her?”

Keith snorted.
