But, she had to admit, that Elena could get a bit too much. It did get a bit of a headache.
“She’s been around me for a long time. And we do call her out on her attitude. When there’s someone to rein her in, things are good.”
“And with alcohol involved, you really think she’s going to be reined in well enough?”
“You let the girls handle her. Elena knows better than to try something with them.”
Marigold snorted.
“I don’t believe that. She’s better not try and do anything stupid around you or Nick, or I’m going to get involved.”
“You worry too much, Marigold.”
“Like I said, I deal with rowdy hockey players. But Elena is something else. If you want, I can get Jake to keep an eye on her. He’s used to putting people in their place.”
“It’s going to be fine.” Daisy smoothed her hands down her dress. “Elena is not as bad as you think. She’ll be on her best behavior because I’m her friend and she loves me.”
Marigold’s expression said she didn’t believe that. Before she could respond, there was a knock at the door, and one of the bridesmaids came in. She looked nervous, holding onto her phone with a death grip and her expression saying she didn’t want to be there.
“Nina? Are you okay?” Daisy frowned. “What is it?”
“It’s about Nick.” Her future sister-in-law bit her lip. “I’m really sorry, Daisy.”
“What are you sorry about?” Daisy hurried towards her. “What’s happened?”
“I’m afraid…the wedding…it’s off.”
Daisy thought she had misheard. She looked at Marigold, who looked equally bewildered.
“What are you talking about? It’s off? Why? Nick’s not said anything to me.”
“He told me to tell you on his way out.” Nina swallowed. “I…I was looking for Elena. She had said she was going to see a couple of friends who had just arrived. When it was time for her to get her hair and makeup done, she was nowhere to be found, so I went looking for her. I heard noises coming from another room down the hall, and I heard Elena’s voice. Then…”
Her voice trailed away. Daisy didn’t like where this was going, but Nina couldn’t stop now.
“Then what? Was Elena with someone?”
“You could say that. She was with Nick.”
It took a moment for the words to sink in. Elena was with Nick in a room? What…?
Clarity settled in, and Daisy felt the blood drain from her face.
“Are you saying?”
“It’s exactly what I’m saying. The sounds coming from that room as well were unmistakable.” Nina was turning her phone over in her hands, looking like she would rather be anywhere but with them right now. “I got them to open the door, and Nick said he wasn’t interested in getting married to you anymore. He was going to head out with Elena, and to hell with the wedding. There was a lot of giggling from Elena, who just lay on the bed with nothing on. It was disgusting.”
Nick had been cheating on her with Elena? Her fiance and her best friend had been messing around behind her back? That couldn’t be right.
But Nina wouldn’t lie to her. Her expression told Daisy everything. Nick had been cheating on her, and he didn’t care to hide it.
The room was starting to tilt, and Daisy swayed. Nina caught her, and she led her to the bed.
“I’m so sorry, Daisy. I know you and Nick…but this…” Nina looked close to tears. “I feel so awful.”
“I…I can’t believe…Nick would…”
“Daisy?” Marigold crouched, taking her sister’s hands in hers. “Look at me, sis. Focus.”
