Nothing had changed. His rules were still hard and fast, and she broke every one of them.He didn’t tup his help…
And he didn’t fall in love.
Families were a hindrance in his line of work, and to care about a woman merely gave him a weakness and put her life in danger.
Nothing had changed. This information meant nothing.
But then he opened the door to his study, and Kitty was there. Her blonde locks glowed in the candlelight, and her skin looked like it was made of silk. But it wasn’t her beauty that had him pausing. It wasn’t the way his blood burned at the sight of her.
It was the fact that she was hugging the General.
Or he was hugging her.Either way, King momentarily entertained visions of murdering his old friend as rage crashed into him hard and fast.
His entrance had her leaping back, as if guilty. But the damned General just smiled.
“Out,” he shouted.Kitty leapt and made as if to run, but the thought of her running from him made his entire body protest.“You stay,” he said, pointing a finger at her as she stared at him with impossibly wide eyes.
Beast huffed beside him, with amusement by the sounds of it.
The General donned his hat and tipped it in Kitty’s direction.“Kitty, it was a pleasure talking to you.I look forward to seeing you again—”
“Like hell you will,” King snapped.
Everyone was silent, but only Kitty looked alarmed.
The blasted General looked as though he were trying not to laugh as he passed King with a cordial nod.
“Keep everyone out,” he said to Beast.
When Beast didn’t reply, King turned to see his old friend eyeing him levelly.“Don’t scare the girl.”
“I would never—”
“She’s been through enough,” he said.
King drew himself up to his full height and settled his coldest, hardest glare at the other man.“And since when is she yours to protect?”
Beast’s lips twitched with ill-disguised mirth.
King’s fists curled at his sides.
“Someone ought to look out for the girl,” Beast said as he backed away.“She’s too sweet for these parts. And if you’re not going to do it—”
“Out!”
Beast’s chuckle could be heard as he closed the door behind him.
Bloody hell.King turned to Kitty.
His Kitty.
His jaw clenched tight at the unwanted thought.
He knew what Beast was trying to do.He knew what he thought…and why.It wasn’t often that King lost his head.Certainly never over a woman.
Never over a whore.
“So help me God, Kitty,” he growled as he stalked toward her.“If you think the General will take you as a mistress, I’ll—”
