Lillian nodded.“Very well. And as for staying on in King’s employment—”
“I cannot,” she said again, with far more vigor. But truly, the thought of being so close to King but ignored as if nothing had ever happened…
She bit her lip and shook her head.“I’m sorry.”
“I understand,” Lillian said.“But perhaps the General could help.He has connections in good society. With him and Mrs.Maddox as references, you could find good work at a respectable home, if you wished.”
Kitty arched her brows, more hopeful than she cared to admit.“That would be lovely.”
Lillian smiled.“I’ll have someone fetch the General so you might discuss it with him, shall I?”
“Yes, please.And thank you.”
Lillian grinned.“If you’ll excuse me, my husband is about to leave with King on some dirty business, I’m afraid.”She patted her belly.“It’s up to me to remind him to stay safe. He’s got more than just himself to worry about, and I’ve found that’s made a world of difference.”
“Of course.”She wanted to ask questions. Was King himself going to deal with Maloney?Would he be safe?
For a moment she had the most ridiculous urge to seek him out like Lillian would seek out her husband. She had the most ludicrous notion that she could have some influence over him.
She nearly scoffed aloud at the wild thought.
“Good luck with the General,” Lillian said.“I hope he can help you find a new home.”
Kitty nodded and tried for a smile.A new home. That was what she ought to be looking forward to.She held Leo close as she took one last look around the bedroom that held all of the simple but refined qualities that marked everything King touched.
He didn’t put on the airs of a lord, but he was a class act in every sense of the word.
She sighed as she headed out to find her brothers and sister, and after that hopefully she’d have a word with the General.
She’d do well to find a new position, someplace far from this tempting home with its mysterious King.
Some place she could forget all about her one night of passion.
