“Of course. Any fool could see.”

Wolfe winced internally at that.

He supposed he deserved to be called a fool, however implicitly. He didn’t know how he could have ever thought of Rui as a man.

She was female all right.

Hisfemale.

Even if he’d never have the honor of claiming her properly.

“What spell?” Wolfe focused on the matter at hand. “How did we break it? I did nothing out of the ordinary.”

“You didn’t have to,” Morgan said, regarding him intently.

“Anyone with strong enough dragon magic would have done it, just through touch alone. Especiallyhismagic.”

“Dragon magic?” he echoed, frowning.

Beside him, he felt Rui stiffen like a board.

“I have no magic. Certainly not a dragon’s.”

Morgan’s jade green eyes softened as she regarded him.

“You do, Wolfe Pendragon. You have the blood of dragon in you.”

Wolfe released a short, disbelieving laugh.

“That is naught but myth. A jest about my bastard origins. I am as far away from the ‘top’ as any man can be. You have it wrong, witch.”

“No,” Morgan argued gently, ignoring the name-calling. “My freedom is a testament that I have the right man. You are half dragon. Hence, pendragon. The son of thefirstdragon, the mightiestheaddragon.”

Wolfe shook his head, taking an involuntary step back.

This was madness. What was this sorceress trying to gain by saying all this?

“Listen to her, Wolfe,” Ere interjected. “We don’t have much time. But you need to know before we storm the castle. We need you on our side.”

Storm the castle?

Wolfe looked from Ere, Sorin, to Morgan and Rui.

They all looked back at him as if they’d already decided on the only course of action available.

Even Rui seemed completely on board. She didn’t seem surprised that the witch just told everyone Wolfe was the spawn of a fucking dragon!

“Speak,” he barked, his heart beating so fast, he could barely hear his own voice for the thunderous crashing of blood against his eardrums.

Morgan didn’t waste time. She began a swift speech, and didn’t bother to pause for breath.

“Centuries ago, when the Romans came, they brought a dragon with them to conquer these lands. Their banners and shields bore the dragon’s emblem. Their warriors were undefeatable in battle with the dragon’s power strengthening the armies. Man and dragon worked together, and peace settled upon this barbaric place.”

She paused to draw a fortifying breath.

“The dragon’s name was Merlin.”

“I knew it,” Ere whispered beside her, his turquoise eyes glittering with intelligence and excitement.
