“Mamma?” Mia whispers.
“What are you doing out here?” I ask.
“I’m so ‘cited.”
Laughing, I stop what I am doing to go to Mia.
An hour later, I have Mia and Noah dressed to the nines in their party clothes. Mia is wearing a pink dress with ruffles that Luke picked out. Noah is wearing a firefighter’s costume that Isaac bought for him.
“Just like my daddies,” Noah says.
He tugs on the little red vinyl firefighter’s vest, complete with hat and badge. He smiles proudly.
“I look pretty like mommy,” Mia says.
Pulling them close to me, I give them both a kiss on the cheek. My little babies are growing up. I feel my eyes watering.
The doorbell rings. The kids are here. Noah and Mia squeal with excitement. I open the door and welcome our guests. We have so many friends. I’m at the door for a solid thirty-minutes welcoming everybody.
When everybody is settled outside eating hamburgers and hot dogs, I signal Luke and Isaac that we are ready. We are dying to give Noah and Mia their birthday present from the three of us.
“Where are you Noah and Mia?”
Both the twins are sitting with Isaac eating. He is the better of us when it comes to getting the twins to settle down and eat. He knows what’s coming and he gets excited.
“Come on my babies, let’s go see why daddy wants us,” Isaac tells the kids.
Isaac, the kids, and I all gather outside our stand-alone garage. Luke whistles and out comes our neighbor holding the cutest golden receiver. The three of us saw this puppy and fell in love with him. We knew he would be perfect for our family.
Luke takes the puppy from our neighbor; he puts her down in front of the twins.
“Happy birthday Mia and Noah,” Luke shouts.
Everybody claps and Mia and Noah start jumping up and down with joy. The three of us are so happy to see them so excited. This morning we felt that we had bought the puppy more for us than for the twins.
The three of us are relieved when Luke puts the dog down on the lawn and Mia and Noah get on their knees to pet the dog. They are beaming with pure happiness and joy.
Luke, Isaac, and I come together and give each other a hug. Everybody claps for us.
Everything feels so perfect. We are living the dream.
“Hey, group hug!” Mia comes over and stretches her arms out to hug us.
“Don’t forget me!” Noah hugs us too.
This is the most perfect moment of my life.
