“You’re not his fucking secretary,” I snap. I’m going to kill that fucker.
“Carter, you’re scaring me.” Her beautiful features are drawn tight with tension.
“You were supposed to meet with Jaxson. Jaxson West oversees the graphics team. You met him in college. He’s one of the twins. He helped fix your truck.”
“Oh,” she finally understands. She takes hold of my arm. “Carter, I don’t want you to do anything. I don’t want people thinking that I can’t handle myself. Stew was just trying to be nice.”
I turn more in the seat and brush some hair behind her ear. I really like it down. It brings out the blue of her eyes.
“Babe, I can’t ignore this. Roberts had his hands on you. He fucked with the wrong female employee.”
Shock ripples over her features. “Please let it go.”
“No. You will only report to Jaxson. Jaxson is one of the directors. Do you really think I would have you making copies for some fucker?”
“What are you going to do?” she asks, her eyes wide on me.
“I’m going to fire his ass, and then I’m going to kick his ass.”
She scoots closer to me and I can see I’m in for a fight. “You can’t, Carter. What will my co-workers think of me if you fire someone because of me? He didn’t really do anything wrong.”
“I’m not going to ignore this.”
She bites her bottom lip and it only makes her look fucking sexy.
“I’ll make you a deal,” she says, a hopeful look replacing the upset one. “I’ll let you buy me some outfits for work, which I will pay back with my first paycheck, if you don’t fire him. You can move him. You can give him a warning. I don’t care, just don’t fire him.”
Fuck, she’s clever. She needs the clothes but she’s stubborn enough to wear the same outfit for the rest of the month just to have her way.
“Fine,” I say, a smile forming on my lips. “I won’t fire him, yet.”
“Yet?” She raises an eyebrow at me.
“Don’t push your luck. An asshole like him will make another mistake and I don’t give second chances.”
“Okay. So it’s a deal.” She actually holds her hand out to me and we shake on it before we get out of the car.
CHAPTER 16
DELLA
My hands caress the charcoal silk dress that falls just above my knees. I’ve never worn something so pretty. The black heels are luckily not too high, so it’s not too hard to walk in them.
I wish I knew how to do my make-up. It’s the only part of me that’s still lacking a bit. That and the haircut I need to give myself this weekend. But other than that, I actually look ready for work.
I feel more confident than yesterday, even though I’m not sure what today will bring.
Walking into Daniele’s room where the girls have been spending most of their time, I smile at the sight of them finger painting. Jamie seems to enjoy it just as much as Danny.
“I’m off to work. I won’t be late tonight.” I press a kiss to both Danny and Jamie’s heads.
“You look so pretty, Della.” Pride shines from my sister’s eyes and it’s times like this that she seems so much wiser than her mere fifteen years.
I give her a smile before walking to the kitchen. I’m just in time to see Carter slip on his jacket. The white shirt stretches tightly over his muscular chest and the sight makes my abdomen clench.
I have to admit that Carter has changed a lot over the past four years. It must be the responsibility of being a CEO. The younger version of him wouldn’t have negotiated with me.
“Morning, babe.” He’s been calling me babe since last night.
